Is homer alaska worth visiting. The drive between seward and homer is about 3 hours and the scenery is not very exciting until just as you approach homer. Sits adjacent to denali national park & preserve. Located near homer, alaska’s first state park and only wilderness park.
There are many vendors, cafes, and restaurants, and boat tours and charterboat fishing for halibut and salmon. This is my detailed recap of one of our trips. The spit is a breakwater that separates kachemak bay from the pacific ocean.
Please realize that opinion is subjective to us being residents, and disliking crowds. It is worth it because it is a beautiful town with lots to do but since you are already on the coast when you arrive and want to see denali i would skip it this trip. Too bad you would limit it.
Seward is 100 miles south of anchorage. That’s why bear viewing opportunities. Seemed too hipsterish to us, and when we went across the bay, to seldovia for a day trip, we loved that place enough to book and pay for it in advance, by seven months, for our three nights.
I’ve been to alaska with kids three times (and not once was a cruise ship involved.) there are lots of special memories to be made above the lower 48, but it’s definitely not your average road trip. It's only $59, which is a bargain in alaska. The scenery is magnificent, there are small villages on the lower peninsula to visit by water taxi, air, or marine ferry.
With your limited time and the fact that you are arriving in seward i would skip homer. Homer’s unique position on the edge of kachemak bay in the kenai peninsula makes it an ideal spot for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Homer, alaska is considered the top destination in the state for both eco and adventure tourism.
The stops along the highway are quite spectacular, so do plan on taking your time between anchorage and girdwood, it is well worth the patience and time. Homer takes some time and planning to get to, but it’s totally worth it! This also means you won’t find big cruise tours here.
With that in mind, yes, go to homer and here is an inexpensive tour you can do (by yourself if sis would rather not pay and just explore homer): With alaska’s short summer with almost constant daylight, you only have a few months each year to catch the good weather and activities. While anchorage, fairbanks, or juneau might be the first places that come to mind when you think about alaska, they aren’t the only ones worth visiting.
How do you get to homer? When you top the hill at baycrest coming into homer, you will get one of the best views in all of alaska, well worth the drive, and homer is an rv friendly city. For such a small community, homer packs a punch with its immense beauty, welcoming town folk and great variety of things to do. But the pratt museum in homer is wonderful. Homer sits on kachemak bay, an inlet off the gulf of alaska and cook inlet.
Traffic is often terrible and turning against traffic is terrible, and this is about the most dangerous highway we have in alaska. This encourages many people to. There is over 80 miles of hiking trails to explore and countless camping possibilities.
It’s unlike other cities/towns in alaska, often being referred to as the “cosmic hamlet by the sea” because of the eclectic vibe. Home to the famous 30 mile k’sugi ridge hike with sweeping views of north america’s tallest mountain. We loved visiting homer the past two summers, but personally find it quite busy.
Homer is located at the south end of alaska’s kenai peninsula, just over 200 road miles south and west of anchorage.
